The foundation of much of Caemmerer's work comes from ecclesiastical stories and figures, so much so that in completing his MFA in 1965, his professor told him that to pass he would have to paint something besides Jesus Christ. So Caemmerer painted a lunch counter scene from the civil rights protests of the time. His professor saw it and said, "it's about time." Then he looked closer and saw the lunch count had twelve men seated at the counter with one man serving them; it was the story of the Last Supper. "That's your interpretation," Caemmerer told the professor. His later work was less overtly religious in theme and centered more on the natural beauty of landscape and cosmos that enveloped him at his home in the Plain Valley.
