“A painting is not bound by the physical canvas or paint; it transcends the edges of the frame; it reaches into the most secret places of the human heart.”

- Richard Caemmerer

Richard Caemmerer was a fine artist, educator, and community builder who lived from 1933-2016. Founder and Director Emeritus of the Grünewald Guild artist retreat center in Leavenworth WA, Richard devoted his life to the creation of magnificent stained glass, sculpture, fresco, sgraftito, and tapestry. His work has transformed approximately 600 churches throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Central America, Germany, Africa, and Yugoslavia, representing all denominations.  His paintings hang in museums and private collections around the world, while his work as a speaker, leader, and professor is made manifest in the rich creative lives of his students and collaborators across generations.

“A History of Christian Art” Video Series

Filmed over five days in the summer of 2008, “A History Of Christian Art” captures the lectures of art historian, artist, professor, and Grünewald Guild founder Richard Caemmerer.  This series was a mainstay of the Guild’s program for almost 30 years. Sit in the Guild’s library with Rich and enjoy his exploration of the sacred intersections of art, faith, and community (and good humor!).

Works For Sale

Some of Richard Caemmerer’s later works are available for purchase, with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Grünewald Guild. Visit their website to view the whole collection, with sizes, mediums, and sale prices.

Richard Caemmerer was famous for his generosity, giving away masterworks to friends, colleagues, and found family, often with no record. And his extensive crafting of stained glass for churches across the atlas has not been entirely documented. If you have photos of any of his works that you don’t see in our portfolio, we would love to see them and share them with his wider community!
